Windward refers to the side of a ship, island or other object exposed to the wind.
Leeward or Lee refers to the side away from the wind.
Boats approaching a ship will do so on the leeward side as the action of the wind and waves are lessened on that side.
Having the Weather gage refers to being upwind of an adversary as one has better manoeuvrability relative to that ship.
