Regardless of what day it is, when the captain calls for Rope Yarn Sunday, it is a day of idleness from the usual daily chores of the ship. Typically, they use this time, using yarn stocked by the ship to make rope, to mend their clothing and hammocks. Otherwise, they can spend the time doing other things they like to do or in idleness.

While enroute across the Atlantic bound for the West Indies, Captain Sawyer of HMS Renown called for Rope Yard Sunday after reading the Articles of War.
