A Master's Mate is a member of the crew of a ship who is directly responsible to the sailing master for the navigation of the ship, condition of sails and rigging, and anchors. Master's Mates are usually selected from senior warrant officers and senior midshipmen who are unlikely to pass the examination for lieutenant.
