HMS Retribution is a sloop-of-war with 18 9pdrs. Originally named La Gaditana, she was captured by the Renown in Samana, and bought into the service. Hornblower was given her as his first posting as commander, and instructed to sail her with dispatches to England, where she was laid off because of the Peace of Amiens.
