HMS Flame was an 18 gun brig. In 1814, the crew of the Flame, lead by Nathaniel Sweet, mutinied while off the coast of France, and Hornblower was sent to negotiate with the mutineers. The mutineers declared that if their demands were not met, they would defect to the French. In order to capture the Flame, Hornblower disguised his own ship, the HMS Porta as the Flame. He then captured a French blockade runner. The French, believing that the Flame had attacked their ship, sent four gunboats after the Flame. Hornblower took advantage of the confusion, and captured the Flame, as well as a gunboat.
