A Commander is a naval officer who commanded vessels too big to be run by a lieutenant but too small for a post-captain. Typical vessels were sloops with fewer than 20 guns, hospital ships or storeships. They didn't have a separate master, so the role was sometimes described as 'master and commander'. A commander wore a single epaulette on the left shoulder of his uniform.
